Redditor 4k9s6bechez shared the beauty tip in a post.

They explained that the $7 Api Tap Water Conditioner keeps their hair healthy from chlorine water.

“I have [had] good success with Aquarium Tap Water conditioner containing sodium thiosulfate. (e.g. API, Amquel, Tetra etc.,” they said.

To start, they simply placed a fourth teaspoon of the solution in a cup with tap water.

“I dunk my ponytail into it to get hair fully saturated and then pour over my roots,” they said.

“Taking care to never get it my eyes! Started this routine 20+ years ago for my summer blond swim team kid whose hair became uncombable, green, shiny and brittle.

“It worked so well several teammates used this concoction too.”

They explained that other products they tried didn’t have nearly the same results.

“Tried Malibu C and all manner of leave-in conditioners to no avail,” they said.

“Conditioners just rinsed off in the pool and fouled filters.”

After multiple swim sessions, the technique proved to be tried and true.

“Currently, I swim laps for an hour, three to four times weekly,” they said.

“I pre-treat my (colored) hair and re-treat at the end of my swim.

“Then I wash and condition as usual. I don’t need much conditioner anymore.

“I’m letting my gray grow in, and it is not turning green.”

The trick, they added, also works on pets.

“I also use it on my dogs. They love to swim, but the chemicals, and or the compounds they bind to, irritate their skin,” they said.

“I keep a pitcher of the solution to pour on their torso and legs when they get out of the pool.

“I diligently keep it away from their eyes!! I also keep a solution in a spray bottle, which works well to reach hard-to-rinse underbelly.

“I have mentioned this practice to my health providers, and they have not warned against it, but neither have they blessed it.

“Our vet was okay with it. I do not have sensitive skin or any allergies, and I do not know if that needs to be considered. It was a tender-headed kiddo’s hair-brushing hero at our house, and the green shiny hair was never a problem again. Hope this helps.”
