Deadpool & Wolverine Crush the Box Office on Comic-Con Weekend

Deadpool & Wolverine topped the box office this weekend, despite the fact that Deadpool is canonically vers. The Marvel Studios/20th Century/Disney joint venture grossed $205 million domestically and $438 million globally, officially making the Marvel Cinematic Universe the first franchise to cross the $30 billion dollar box office mark (per Variety). Fans clearly wanted to see a movie where an Australian man pretends to be Canadian and a Canadian man pretends to be self-aware. The Deadpool & Wolverine promo cycle has been inescapable, as well. There’s been countless late night appearances, an endorsement from Taylor Swift (more than Kamala’s gotten so far), and spots on all the important internet shows from Ryan and Hugh. And in-keeping with the extremely online rollout of the film, the stars celebrated their box office win with a meme, a take on the Sad Wolverine from the original X-Men cartoon.

Behind Deadpool & Wolverine was Twisters. Could the disaster flick have stayed at number one with more kissing/acknowledgment of climate change? We’ll never know. At numbers three and four were two kiddie sequels: Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2. And Longlegs rounded out the top five. It’s the horror film’s third week in the top five. Not once, not twice, but as many times as it likes.
