History of lipstick

There’s no exact date for the invention of lipstick. However, evidence suggests that it has been around for thousands of years.

It has been dated back as far as 2500 BC to Mesopotamia.

Documentation suggests that a Mesopotamian queen was wearing lip colour made from ground stones.

Another queen who valued her lippy was Cleopatra.

It is believed that she wore a red colour made from carmine dye, with an estimated 70,000 ground beetles needed to make one pound of the dye.

Due to this, the dye was very expensive and so the lip colour was a sign of great affluence and power.

Cleopatra’s subjects, both women and men, who could not afford carmine dye would use ground rocks.

However, this gave more of a rusty colour, preserving the bright red shade for the elite.

Queen Elizabeth I wore red lip colouring, supposedly to ward off evil spirits.

When the queen died, there was apparently up to half an inch of lip colour still on her face.

However, the colour she wore was made from lead, potentially meaning that Elizabeth I gave herself lead poisoning by wearing it every day.

While this might be the history of the lipstick, the cosmetic product didn’t get its distinctive shape until 1884.

This was when Guerlain produced the Ne M’Oubliez Pas, the first recorded tube of lipstick.

Previously, lip colouring came in a glass tub. The swivel technology was added in 1922 by inventor James Bruce Mason Jr.
