Families of pilot, 21, & passenger, 24, killed when aircraft crashed into field are ‘utterly heartbroken’ at tragic loss

THE two men who died in a light aircraft crash have been named by police.

Matthew Bird, 21, from Spofforth, was the pilot of the light aircraft, and Oliver Dawes, 24, of Burley in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, was the passenger, cops said.

Emergency services raced to the scene in Thorganby, between Selby and York, North Yorkshire at around 9.50am on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), said: “We are aware of an incident south of York and have deployed a team to investigate.”

Matthew’s family said he was a beloved son, brother and grandson in a statement issued by police.

They said in tribute: “Matthew meant so much to so many.

“We are utterly heartbroken but he will live on in our hearts as we cherish the incredibly special memories he’s left us with.”

Oliver’s family said: “Oliver will continue to live on in our hearts and memories as the kind, generous, hardworking and fun man he had become.

“We will miss him every day for the rest of our lives, we are heartbroken.”

Matthew and Oliver were the only occupants and no other injuries were reported in the crash, which happened at around 9.50am.

The main road through the village, near the town of Selby, was closed all day.

The circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be investigated today, North Yorkshire Police said.

Selby MP Keir Mather posted: “Incredibly saddened by the news.”
