I used to sob at my desk in my toxic office job – I’m so much happier since I quit to work in a coffee shop

WORK can be a stressful environment and cause people’s mental health to deteriorate.

This is what happened to TikTok user @linzblog_ who shared a video with clips comparing how she was feeling working two completely different jobs.

One clip showed the woman sobbing at her desk while the other saw her laughing behind the coffee shop counter with her colleague.

The text on the video reads: “When you didn’t realise how toxic your workplace was and how much it was affecting your mental health.”

“I wish I could just hug the girl in the video and tell her everything is going to be OK! #londonstruggles,” she added in the caption.

Despite the fact some might see the office career as more aspirational, she insisted it wasn’t worth the downside.

People took to the comments to share their own work-related mental health struggles.

“This was me when I was BULLIED out [of] my workplace and was made to feel so useless,” one person said.

Another commented: “I left the toxic job.. but I was bearing it for too long… Now I feel that they won and it affected me anyways…

“Time goes and it improves… hopefully, I will move on and stop thinking about [the] situation.”

“I felt this in my BONES, I feel like I can breathe now [beating heart emoji] glad ur happier now!” a third wrote.

“It’s crazy how some workplaces make u feel like this it’s so sad [disappointed face emoji],” someone else penned.

Last year, life coach Michelle Elman revealed the four signs you need to leave your job.

She explained that dreading getting up and going to work regularly isn’t the norm.

“We have all had mornings we dread but if that feeling is every day, then you have to remember that the bulk of your day (and week) is spent at work,” she said.

Another point she made is that you should be able to communicate with those in your workplace.

What are my options if I hate my job?

According to the job-searching website Indeed, you have several options.

  1. Assess your situation
  2. Talk to your boss about your challenges
  3. Assess your career goals
  4. Quit your job and start looking for a new one

She said: “You can be as good at communication as you want but if your workplace is not receptive and listening, then you might as well be talking to a brick wall.”

She added there was an “energy exchange” among employees and it can be affected by things like if you feel like you’re not being paid enough.

“When we lack self-worth we do not equate our time and energy to a high value but some key signs could be that you are working more than one person’s job or the person above you does less than you but is being paid more,” she said.

Finally, she explained a toxic workplace alone is a sign you need to leave it as soon as you can.

“Sometimes you can love your job but the people you work with make your day more difficult than it needs to be.”
