Union calls for reappointment of Gesy chief

Isotita union on Monday charged it was a matter of urgency that a Gesy commissioner is appointed, as incumbent Christodoulos Kaisis’ term is up on July 31 when he retires.

In a statement, the union said there were loud rumours suggesting there are plans to scrap the post in its entirety.

Expressing its opposition to the idea, Isotita said come August 1, staff would be left without a chief and no one to approve their leave.

They also said they were unsure if the messenger would be allowed to use the service vehicle to send off any post.

Isotita called on the health ministry and government at large to “immediately take all necessary action” to appoint a new Gesy commissioner and ensure workers’ rights for paid and sick leave.

Failing to appoint a new commissioner would violate the 2001 Gesy law and would constitute an illegal act, the union said.

It went on to add that without a new commissioner, staff will be unable to do their work as of August 1 and will be left without a chief.
