Man found in cafe with bloody knife remanded for eight days

A man who had been found in a supermarket cafe holding a bloody knife was remanded in custody for eight days on Monday after having been arrested the previous day on suspicion of attempted murder.

The man had been found after members of the public informed the police of his presence at the cafe, saying that he bore a resemblance to an image put out by police of a wanted person.

Police had been looking for him after two people were admitted to hospital in Limassol on Saturday after having both been stabbed by the same person.

The first, a 33-year-old man, was found in the city by the police and was taken by ambulance to the Limassol general hospital.

He had two wounds on his back which doctors said had been caused by a “sharp object” and remains in hospital.

Later in the day, a 22-year-old man took himself to the Limassol general hospital having been stabbed in the chest.

Limassol police chief Andreas Angelides said on Monday that “police were mobilised, the man was located, arrested, and presented in court today.”

He added that the man had told police there had been an “intense discussion” prior to the stabbings.

“The important thing is that from the police’s point of view, all these investigations will be done, the cycle of statements and actions will be completed so the case can be taken to court as soon as possible,” he said.

He went on to say that police in Limassol are “concerned with various issues arising from groups of people, especially in the city centre”.

“This is why the police are intensifying its efforts and checks,” he added.

The 33-year-old victim has been intubated at the Limassol general hospital and is in a “serious but stable” condition.
