Son Heung-min is over the moon to see how some of the young players at Tottenham have been performing during pre-season but insisted that it would be unfair to expect too much from them at this stage of their careers.

Heung-min Son wants a special Spurs season

Son is set to embark on his tenth season at Tottenham, having joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015.

In that time, the forward has acquired legendary status at the North London side and has evolved into one of the best players in the Premier League. The Lilywhites will once again be relying on him to be at his best if they are to compete for major honours.

When asked what his goals are for the upcoming season, the Spurs captain told journalist Sungmo Lee: “I always think there are many teams at a higher position than us. Therefore, if we want to compete, we have to run more and be ready to sacrifice ourselves. We have many great players. I want to go step by step to make a special season.”

When quizzed on his personal goals, the forward said: “To lead a team well is most important, not get injured and be happy. I need to learn a lot, I don’t set personal goals, but I want to show better form for the team, sacrificing for the team. To repay fan’s support is my goal.”

The 32-year-old was used as a central striker plenty of times last season despite being a left-winger by trade, partly down to Richarlison’s injury woes.

When asked which position he would rather play, he said: “Well, it’s up to our gaffer. I know exactly what I need to do at the top, and left wing. I believe he will use me well according to the situation, and I believe my role is to play the role well as the boss wants.”

Son tells Spurs to be patient with young players

There is plenty of excitement at Tottenham about the young players coming through the ranks at the moment.

Along with the new faces like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, there are also high hopes for academy graduates such as Mikey Moore, Jamie Donley and Alfie Devine, many of whom have stood out in the pre-season friendlies.

When asked if he has been impressed with what he has seen from these players, Son said: “I believe they are players with great futures, and they are training really hard. When I see them, they remind me of when I was at that age. I am trying to help them, giving bits of advice to them.

“For sure they have great talents and I think we better not to expect too much from them, enjoying their development while watching their play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The likes of Gray and Bergvall are still quite raw and have not played at the highest level before. Postecoglou will thus be patient with them and we might not see the best of the pair until next season.
