At the other end of the scale Yorkshire’s Robin Hood’s Bay was named the most expensive place for fish and chips, costing a whopping £14.73 – which amounts to 2.12 per cent of an average weekly salary.

The study said: “Despite the steep price tag, families and holidaymakers flock here annually, demonstrating a willingness to pay for quality.

“Local shops maintain a solid average customer rating of 4.2 out of 5, affirming the high standard of the takeaway dish.

“Located on the picturesque Yorkshire coast along the Cleveland Way National Trail, Robin Hood’s Bay is a favourite holiday spot for many families, especially during the summer months.

“Some fish and chip shops in this scenic area offer panoramic views of the sea, perhaps helping to justify the premium price.”

Salcombe, a popular coastal holiday destination in Devon, ranked as the second most expensive location for fish and chips in the UK with an average price of £14.20.

Third was Tynemouth, in the North East, where the cost of the traditional dinner, had an average price of £11.47, where gross weekly earnings averaged £624.

However, the most expensive place was Plockton in Scotland, where you’d have to fork out an astonishing £5.30 for a large chips.

The study looked at 30 UK locations and took into account a number of factors such as average ratings of shops, average fish and chip prices as well as those prices as a percentage of the average weekly salary in each area.

It not only revealed the cheapest and most expensive fish and chips but all the “affordability” rankings in relation to local salaries.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, when it came to the most popular fish to go with the chips, cod came out on top, with 67 out of the 81 restaurants contacted offering this classic combination.

On average, a serving of cod and chips will set you back £10.92.

The second favourite was haddock cost just 21p more, with fish and chip shops charging an average of £11.13 for this fish choice.

However, it is less common, with just 35 restaurants offering this type of fish.
