SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Reyes Moronta died Sunday in his home country of the Dominican Republic, the Mexican Baseball League announced on social media. He was 31 years old.

Moronta played for the Giants from 2017 to 2021. After the Giants, he moved between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels between 2022 and 2023. Last week, Moronta was released from the Mexican League’s Bravos de Leon.

Moronta was reportedly killed in a traffic accident in the northern part of the Dominican Republic on Sunday night, according to a former teammate.

“We profoundly regret the unexpected death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday,” reads a statement shared by the management of the Aguilas Cibaenas, a team in the Dominican league which Moronta had been signed to play for in the 2024-2025 season. “The Aguilas board, the baseball operations department and players share the pain with his family, and we pray for his eternal rest.”

Moronta went 8-9 in the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Giants, recording a 2.66 ERA across 121.2 innings pitched.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
