Louisiana taxpayers have September deadline to claim state tax refunds

Some individual and business taxpayers received letters in the mail about state tax refunds.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Some individual and business taxpayers received letters in the mail about state tax refunds.

According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, Notice of Unclaimed Property letters were sent to 18,801 individual and business taxpayers telling them to claim their refunds before it becomes unclaimed property.

Those who received letters have until Sept. 6, 2024, to claim their state tax refunds. The state Department of Revenue said unclaimed refunds total $15,057,684.

If you received a letter, you can claim your refund in two ways. The first is to go to this website and follow the directions. The second way is to complete and return the voucher attached to the July 26 Notice of Unclaimed Property letter.

LDR said they will issue paper checks if you submit a claim by the deadline.

Officials said, "Any refund not claimed by the deadline remains the property of the taxpayer, and can be retrieved from the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office."
