Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump on Friday called out his likely Democratic opponent Vice President Kamala Harris for record of animosity toward Catholic Americans.

“As everyone here understands, the radical left ideology Kamala supports is really militantly hostile toward Americans of faith,” Trump said on Friday at Turning Point Action’s Believers’ Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“As a Senator, she viciously attacked highly qualified judicial nominees simply because they were members of the Knights of Columbus, suggesting that their Catholic faith disqualified them from serving on the federal bench,” he pointed out.

Trump was referring to Judge Brian Buescher, a Knight of Columbus whom the former president successfully appointed to United States District Court for the District of Nebraska in 2018.

During the Catholic nominee’s confirmation hearings, then-Sen. Harris asked Buescher: “Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?”

CatholicVote’s Erika Ahern noted that Harris “also asked whether Buescher had been aware that the Knights ‘oppose marriage equality’ and whether he would promise to leave the Knights of Columbus should he be appointed to the District Court.”

Ahern wrote last week:

Harris shamelessly used Buescher’s membership in the world’s largest charitable organization to suggest that espousing Catholic teachings on abortion and same-sex “marriage” disqualifies an individual from serving in public office.

In short, Catholics need not apply.

CatholicVote President Brian Burch also commented on Harris’ decision to single out the Catholic judge’s membership in the Knights.

“Not only is this a gross form of anti-religious bigotry, it’s also unconstitutional,” Burch wrote last week.

“Harris’ version of being Catholic is a Catholic who surrenders their core beliefs,” Burch wrote. He also noted that when Harris “last served in the U.S. Senate – her rating from Planned Parenthood was a perfect 100.”

In 2019, the legislative tracking website GovTrack ranked Harris as the “most liberal” out of all then-U.S. Senators.

The website later removed this label – a fact that observers pointed out after Harris’ recent entry into the 2024 presidential election.

One critic called GovTrack’s decision to remove Harris’ “most-liberal” moniker “Orwellian” and likened it to the “memory-holing” practice exercised by the fictional totalitarian government in the classic dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”
