'Who cut the deal?' Ex-Trump adviser fact-checks Newsmax host defending former president
Former National Security Adviser John Bolton has said that in the United States' 2024 presidential election, he won't be voting for either Donald Trump or the Democratic nominee. Instead, the hawkish neocon plans to write in former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Bolton has been a scathing critic of Trump's foreign policy views, and he has attacked both Trump and President Joe Biden on the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan.
During a July 29 appearance on far-right network Newsmax, Bolton and host Eric Bolling had a heated debate over Trump and Afghanistan. When Bolling claimed that Afghanistan wouldn't have fallen to the Taliban if Trump had stayed in office, Bolton reminded him that Biden was following Trump's deal.

Bolling told Bolton, "You know, what made us less safe is when Biden pulled us out of Afghanistan. Thirteen Americans died…. And now, the Taliban tells us, 'Back off, don't kill al-Qaeda.'"

Bolton responded, "Same thing they would have done under Donald Trump…. Who cut the deal, Eric?.... What would Trump have done had he been reelected?"
The former national security adviser reminded Bolling that the withdrawal from Afghanistan "was Trump's deal," telling the Newsmax host, "Eric, you don't know what you're talking about. He wanted everybody out."
Bolton continued, "He cut a deal to do exactly that….. The record on that is clear."
