One dead, four injured in Contra Costa crashes

A man was killed and four women were injured in two Contra Costa County vehicle crashes Sunday.

BRENTWOOD — A man was killed Sunday night when his speeding truck crashed and overturned off Camino Diablo and four women were injured in a hit-and-run collision on Highway 4 earlier in the day, the California Highway Patrol said.

The name of the man killed has not yet been released pending confirmation of his name and notification of his family.

According to the CHP, the man was driving a Toyota Tundra at an unsafe speed westbound on Camino Diablo east of Vasco Road about 7:35 p.m. Sunday.

The CHP said the man lost control of the truck while taking a curve in the roadway. The truck left the roadway and overturned, causing him to be ejected, the CHP said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP said he was not wearing a a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Investigators were trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors.

The hit-and-run collision happened just after 1 p.m. Sunday on westbound Highway 4 just west of Lone Tree Way, the CHP said.

Authorities said a man was driving a burgundy Toyota Tacoma with four women as passengers.

At the same time, an unknown person was driving a dark pickup truck with a trailer in tow, directly to the right of the Toyota in the lane closest to the shoulder, the CHP said. The dark pickup suddenly made an unsafe lane change, crashing into the right side of the Toyota, the CHP said.

The impact caused the Toyota to veer to the left, into the grassy center divide, where it overturned multiple times, the CHP said.

The Toyota driver was not hurt but the four women suffered various injuries. One had to be airlifted to a hospital and the other three were taken to a hospital by ambulance. They are all expected to recover. All the occupants of the Toyota were properly seat belted, the CHP said.

The trailer-towing pickup was last seen driving westbound on Highway 4. It is not known if drugs or alcohol were factors in what happened.

The CHP is asking any witnesses to the crashes or the events leading up to them  or anyone who has dashcam footage of the hit-and-run driver to contact the CHP Contra Costa office at 925-646-4980 or email the information to 320investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by an investigator.
