Target’s latest trade-in program will recycle used denim

Customers can trade up to five pairs of denim for a 20% coupon aimed at back-to-school shopping.

Target is offering a new incentive to its shoppers: Bring us your old denim.

Bootleg or skinny cut, dark blue or acid-washed, it doesn’t matter to Target.

The retailer is launching a trade-in program similar to its popular car seat trade-in. Customers can bring in used denim between Aug. 4-10, and get a 20%-off coupon to buy something — perhaps back-to-school clothes — at Target.

The Minneapolis-based retailer said in a press release that it’s goal is to reduce landfill waste.

“With back-to-school and college shopping top of mind for families, we’re offering this 20% off Target Circle deal to make it even more affordable for our guests to refresh their denim wardrobes, while also doing our part to reduce waste and keep used denim out of landfills,” Gena Fox, Target’s senior vice president of merchandising for apparel and accessories, said in a statement.

Target said that, similar to its car-seat program, materials from the denim would be repurposed by its partners.

Customers are limited to trading five pairs of denim for the Target Circle promotion.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates Americans throw out 85% of their used clothing. That adds up to million of tons going into landfills.

Target’s said its car-seat program each year sends millions of used chairs to waste management partners, who recycle the materials into pallets, plastic buckets, and construction materials.
