Janelle James (‘Abbott Elementary’): Emmys 2024 episode submission revealed

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Janelle James is entering the “Abbott Elementary” episode “Career Day, Part 1” as her 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. The episode aired on February 7 and is the Season 3 premiere of the ABC series.

In “Career Day, Part 1,” a flashback to five months earlier reveals that Ava (James) returned from her Harvard summer classes as the kind of principal the teachers have always wanted: competent, firm, organized. But the new Ava’s rules are killing their vibe, so they plot to turn her back to the old Ava. When their early attempts fail, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) realizes they need to play the one song that Ava cannot resist: Juvenile‘s “Back That Azz Up.”

This is James’ third consecutive nomination in this category for “Abbott Elementary.” She’s up against her co-star Ralph, Carol Burnett (“Palm Royale”), Liza Colón-Zayas (“The Bear”), Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”) and Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”).

“Abbott Elementary” has nabbed 24 nominations through three seasons, including nine this year.
