Fans slam Man Utd owners the Glazers as ‘parasites’ as ex-player reveals shock decision ended title bid

Legendary US women’s winger Tobin Heath has explained how United‘s players and then-manager Casey Stoney were thwarted off the pitch as they pushed for the WSL crown in 2020-21.

And her claims have left fans calling the Glazers “parasites” as well as “embarrassing”

Heath and Essex-born ex-Chelsea player-boss Stoney, 42, both left United for other clubs at the end of the season.

And the 29-year-old revealed the incredible frustration that helped cause their exits.

Speaking in her podcast, Heath told how the players and Stoney “re-evaluated” their goals for the campaign in December 2020.

The pre-season target of finishing in the top four – meaning a Champions League spot – was upgraded to: “We are going to win the league”.

But Stoney was rocked when she met the board to discuss the new goal.

Heath said: “You would think Manchester United would be like, ‘This is Manchester United, YES! We’re going to win the league’.

“But when Casey went to the board, to the decision-makers and said, ‘Help us win the league’ they said, ‘This is a five-year plan. We didn’t expect to win the league this year, it’s not part of the plan’.

“I think in that moment, for us, our ambition going over there and what we give, and for Casey, being a young and super ambitious coach… why would we ever want to be part of a club that the plan wasn’t to win the league when you can win the league?”

Fans on social media were staggered to learn of the club’s apparent lack of boldness at the time – with United’s women ending up fourth.

One posted: “Glazers – 0 expectations from them.”

Another called the situation: “Crazy stuff.”

However, some supporters believe the saga mainly shows that United as a club fail to back the women’s team enough.

Nonetheless, a common theme was relief that Ratcliffe’s Ineos now have a large stake in the club.

One said: “At least good that Ineos have taken our sporting side of the club. Silver lining in the dark cloud.”
