Police ID men killed hours apart in Oakland, one while attending the other’s vigil

OAKLAND — Police have identified two men killed hours apart on the same June day in Oakland — with one of the victims being shot dead at the other’s vigil.

The bloody day started around 1:30 a.m. June 25 on the 1200 block of International Boulevard in Oakland, where 35-year-old Kamal Yates was killed by two shooters who have yet to be identified, authorities said. Yates appeared to be targeted and was being trailed prior to his death, according to police.

That night, a little after 9 p.m., a man named Donte Walker, 33, was attending a vigil for Yates on the 2700 block of 73rd Avenue in Oakland when he was shot and killed.

Both shootings remain under investigation, and police say they’re probing multiple leads, including a possible gang-related motive. Police believe that Walker and Yates knew one another but haven’t said how.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in either case. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
