1 severely injured after rollover crash in Genesee County

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A Basom man was severely injured in a one-vehicle crash Monday in Genesee County, said Genesee County Sergeant Andrew Hale.

Just before 5 p.m. the 39-year-old crash victim, while driving a Jeep, was heading northbound on Route 63 toward Medina coming out of the Town of Alabama when he “blew through” construction signs and went off the east shoulder of the roadway, Hale said.

According to officials, the vehicle struck a road closure sign, rolled three times and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected 30 feet from the Jeep.

“Had he been wearing a seat belt, he would have been probably trapped and crushed by the rolling of the Jeep, so in this instance, it appears that being ejected from the vehicle is what ultimately saved him,” he said.

Hale said the driver was conscious and alert, but sustained severe injuries. The driver was transported to ECMC via Mercy Flight.

They currently do not suspect that alcohol was involved and are still testing for drugs.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
