They edged out France over the multi-day event, with a fine performance from all three team members in the showjumping on Monday after sitting top of the leaderboard following the dressage and cross country.

After securing the win all three members of the team spoke to media alongside Yasmin Harper, who is part of the supporting staff.

But McEwen was caught out on his phone by the reporter as he began interviewing Collett.

The 33-year-old responded with a smirk on his face, saying: “I’ve got to go. I’ve got to go.”

McEwen put in a faultless display in the showjumping round, clearing all 16 hurdles to put Team GB on the verge of victory.

Later in the day he agonisingly missed out on a second medal as he finished fourth in the individual eventing.

His team-mate Collett pipped him to bronze to pick up her third Olympic medal.

She also won gold in the team eventing in Tokyo and after becoming a two-time champion she expressed her delight.
