Timothee Chalamet (‘A Complete Unknown’) rises in Oscar odds for Best Actor following trailer debut

“A Complete Unknown” debuted its trailer on July 24, and it’s already paying dividends for star Timothee Chalamet in our Oscar odds for Best Actor. As of this writing he’s within striking distance of a nomination. Make or update your forecasts now here in our predictions center.

“A Complete Unknown” is that classic Oscars genre: the music biopic. It focuses on Bob Dylan (played by Chalamet) in the early years of his career. Playing famous musicians has resulted in Oscars for multiple actors, including Jamie Foxx (Ray Charles in “Ray”), Reese Witherspoon (June Carter in “Walk the Line”) and Renee Zellweger (Judy Garland in “Judy”). Jeff Bridges even won Best Actor for playing a fictional musician in “Crazy Heart.”

The most recent music men to earn Best Actor nominations were Andrew Garfield (Jonathan Larson in “Tick, Tick… Boom!”), Austin Butler (Elvis Presley in “Elvis”) and Bradley Cooper (Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro”). And the most recent actor to earn a nomination specifically for playing Bob Dylan was actually an actress: Cate Blanchett in “I’m Not There.” Will Chalamet join their ranks?

So far three Expert journalists are predicting him to make the cut, and they just so happen to be the three Experts who updated their predictions most recently: Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Sasha Stone (Awards Daily). Four Gold Derby Editors are also predicting him to be nominated. So are 13 of our Top 24 Users and 15 of our All-Star Top 24.

This would be Chalamet’s second Oscar nomination, following his breakthrough Best Actor bid for “Call Me by Your Name” seven years ago. Since then he has been in the awards conversation multiple times, but hasn’t made the cut again. He probably came closest to another nom with his supporting role as a struggling addict in “Beautiful Boy,” after which he appeared in Best Picture nominees “Little Women,” “Dune: Part One” and “Don’t Look Up.”

This year Chalamet also appeared in “Dune: Part Two,” a less likely Oscar nom for the actor (he ranks 18th in our odds for that performance). But the sci-fi epic is one of the top contenders for Best Picture, and it solidified Chalamet as a bona fide movie star. So the one-two punch of film achievements could motivate academy members even more to call him by his name again.
