Extreme heat indices could hit 112 degrees in Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) - With dangerously hot temperatures expected, the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office (SNSO) shared some tips to help people beat the heat.

On Monday, July 29 the National Weather Service (NWS) of Topeka issued an excessive heat warning for all of northeast Kansas. Dangerously hot conditions with heat indices up to 112 degrees are expected. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024.

The NWS warns of illness from extreme heat and high humidity. They say people should wear lightweight loose-fitting clothing and try to limit hard work.

The SNSO reminds residents to drink lots of water, check on vulnerable people & animals, avoid strenuous outdoor work, stay in air-conditioned locations and stay informed.

Further east, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) warned that children's body temperature can rise three to five times faster than an adult's.

"Within 10 minutes, a vehicle’s temperature can rise more than 20 degrees. Such hot temperatures reinforce the importance of not leaving children unattended in your vehicle," the DCSO wrote on Facebook.
