But his night became even more special after he stepped off the podium following the medal ceremony.

As Murphy made his way over to his family, a banner held up by fiancee Bridget Konttinen read: “Ryan it’s a Girl.”

Murphy was visibly over the moon as he celebrated by throwing his hands above his head and showing off a beaming smile.

He then went over to Bridget in the stands and hugged her, before he also gave her a kiss.

The couple have been dating since 2016 and got engaged in 2022.

Murphy is the Olympic record holder in the 100m with a time of 51.85 seconds which he set in Rio eight years ago.

But he had to settle for bronze in Paris as Italian Thomas Ceccon claimed gold, ahead of China’s Xu Jiayu.

It means Murphy has now finished first, second and third in the 100m backstroke at each of the last three Games.

And he was clearly jubilant at the result as he took to social media.

Speaking on Instagram, he said: “Back on the Olympic podium! This feeling never gets old!

“Congrats @ceccon_thomas & @xujiayu0819 on a great race. 200 back coming up!”

Murphy will also compete in the 200m backstroke on Wednesday.
