Shawnee County opens cooling centers

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Shawnee County Parks & Recreation will be opening a number of designated cooling centers with heat indices expected to be more than 100 degrees.

"Shawnee County Parks + Recreation continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents by maintaining designated County facilities as cooling centers during extreme weather conditions," Parks & Rec wrote in a press release.

On Monday, July 29 the National Weather Service (NWS) of Topeka issued an excessive heat warning for all of northeast Kansas. Dangerously hot conditions with heat indices up to 112 degrees are expected. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024.

Cooling centers will be open at the following locations:

  • Central Park Community Center
    • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • 1534 SW Clay
  • Crestview Community Center
    • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • 4801 SW Shunga Dr
  • Hillcrest Community Center
    • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • 1800 SE 21st Street
  • Garfield Community Center
    • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • 1600 NE Quincy St.
  • Oakland Community Center
    • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • 801 NE Poplar
  • Shawnee North Community Center
    • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • 300 NE 43rd St.
