WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A Peekskill man was indicted for allegedly killing a Westchester County Department of Social Services case worker, District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced Tuesday.

The incident happened on May 14 at a residence on South Street in Peekskill, according to officials.

Maria Coto, 56, was conducting home visits at around 3:08 p.m., when Hasseem Jenkins, 31, allegedly attacked her, prosecutors said.

Jenkins punched and kicked Coto multiple times, causing severe brain bleeding, brain swelling, and numerous facial fractures, officials said.

Coto was taken to the Westchester Medical Center and placed on a ventilator. She passed away on June 19.

Jenkins allegedly resisted arrest and was found to have Coto's cell phone, officials said.

He was remanded to Westchester County Jail and is due back in court on August 6.
