'Truly weird': Even Joe Manchin is piling on J.D. Vance

Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV), the most conservative senator who currently caucuses with the Democratic Party, is now joining in the pile-on of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

CBS News' Laura K. Garrison on Tuesday asked Manchin what he thought about Vance's past comments about people who don't have children being "more sociopathic" and "less mentally stable" than people who have children.

While Manchin has never been a partisan bomb thrower, he seemingly couldn't resist taking a shot at his Republican colleague.

"That truly is just a weird position to take," Manchin said. "I never heard that before. It was very weird. I couldn't believe it.”

Manchin's use of the term "weird" to describe Vance is likely not an accident.

For the last week, Democrats have accused Vance of being "weird" for his views on women who don't have children, and it's forced him to react defensively to past comments he made about Vice President Kamala Harris being a "childless cat lady," even though she helped raise two stepchildren with her husband Doug Emhoff.

In addition to attacks from Democrats, Vance has also been the subject of numerous internet jokes that baselessly suggest he has a fetish for couches.
