Bicyclist killed in San Jose’s 26th traffic fatality of year

The rider — who police said was going against a red light — collided with a truck, then was hit by a car.

SAN JOSE — A bicyclist was killed Friday after colliding with the rear of a pickup truck then being run over by a car, police said.

Around 12:20 p.m., an adult male bicyclist was riding westbound on East Julian Street — through a red light, authorities said in a news release Tuesday — when he crashed into the back end of a Ford pickup truck that had been driving southbound on North 10th Street. The truck, occupied by two men, was driving through a green light.

The bicyclist fell onto the street, where he was hit by a second car traveling on N. 10th Street through the green light. The second car, a Chevy sedan, was occupied by a male driver.

The bicyclist was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, authorities said. His identity was withheld pending confirmation and notification of his next of kin.

Both drivers are cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The incident marks the 26th traffic death and 26th fatal collision of the year, authorities said. It is the fifth traffic fatality to include a bicyclist death this year, according to data compiled by Bay Area News Group. It was also the second bicyclist death over a two-day span, just one day after a woman died after being hit by a car while she rode a bike.

Police have asked anyone with further information to contact Detective Rachel Bowen #4461 at 4461@sanjoseca.gov or 408-277-4654.
