Israel targets senior Hezbollah commander in airstrike on South Beirut

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday, July 30th, that it had targeted a senior Hezbollah commander in an airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital.

The military stated that the commander was responsible for a rocket attack on a soccer field in the Golan Heights, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant wrote on X following the explosion, “Hezbollah crossed a red line.”

Lebanon’s state news agency reported that the Israeli strike targeted the area around Hezbollah’s Advisory Council in the Harat Hreik neighbourhood of Beirut.

Israeli media, citing a photo of Fouad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander and senior advisor to Hassan Nasrallah, reported that he was the target of the Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut.

There has been no update on the fate of the commander.

On July 27th, 12 people, including several children, were killed in a rocket attack on a soccer field in an area in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The attack also left 13 others injured.

Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for the attack and stated that it was not involved.

Israel and the U.S. have accused Hezbollah of being behind the attack.

The Times of Israel reported on Sunday, July 28th, that following a meeting of the Israeli security cabinet, Israel plans to deliver a strong response to Hezbollah. However, the media outlet suggested that Israel does not appear to be seeking an all-out war with Hezbollah.

The escalation in hostilities highlights the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. While Israel’s response has been swift, the situation remains volatile, with both sides bracing for further confrontation.
