Clashes of the generations always add spice, and five-year-old Emily Upjohn must dispose of Coronation runner-up Opera Singer and 1,000 Guineas heroine Elmalka to take the prestigious Group 1 prize.
That’s not all, as also in the field is French raider Sparkling Plenty who looked really good in the Diane (French Oaks) at Chantilly last time.
Her form with the third that day, Tamfana, ties in closely with the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas outcome.
That day Elmalka picked up the talented Porta Fortuna in style, with Tamfana a fast-closing fourth.
Elmalka, though, never got going two places away from Opera Singer at Royal Ascot.
Emily Upjohn was back to her best last time, putting up a monster run under Shoemark in the Pretty Polly in Ireland.
She chased Bluestocking and she did not let the form down in the King George at Ascot.
The fancy goes on good to firm and is already a Group 1 heroine having landed a Coronation Cup and Champions Fillies’ and Mares’ at Ascot.
This could be huge for Shoemark who had hist first Group-race success for John & Thady Gosden at Ascot the other day thanks to Friendly Soul.
ITV Racing starts with a handicap over 1m2f. This is wide open.
I suspect INTO BATTLE (1.50) has each-way claims for the talented Ed Walker.
I have to hope a gelding operation has not set him back, but if it’s actually helped then he might find a bit more than his mark.
The selection started this season in good shape at Epsom and was a fine fifth in the London Gold Cup.
He kept on nicely last time over 1m1f. The draw could have been better but I’ll take the chance.
Up in class for the Richmond Stakes. Not original but THE STRIKIN VIKING (2.25) has already done more than most of these winning nicely at York on debut and then chasing home Henri Matisse in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh.
The other big race is the Group 3 Gordon Stakes. A poor renewal probably and JAN BRUEGHEL (3.00) should take this in his stride.
The only doubt is fast ground, but he looked good at the Curragh on debut and banged in the Group 3 International at the same track last time when staying on strongly. Should just be too good.
