Car clocked going 71 mph over the speed limit in Kansas

A driver was caught speeding 71 miles over the limit on a western Kansas Highway.

SYRACUSE, Kan. (KSNW) – A driver was caught speeding 71 mph over the limit on a western Kansas highway. It happened Wednesday morning in Hamilton County.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office shared a photo of a deputy's radar screen, which clocked a driver traveling 136 mph in a 65 mph zone on Kansas Highway 27. K-27 is a north-south highway that runs from the Oklahoma to Nebraska border. It is the westernmost state highway in Kansas and one of the state's earliest highways.

The fine for speeding 30 mph over the limit is $195, plus $15 per mile over the original 30 miles over the limit, which would amount to $615. The total fine is $810, plus any court fees that may be associated with the ticket. That doesn't account for any additional citations that may be issued at the time of the stop.

Law enforcement across Kansas has seen a sharp increase in excessive speeding. As of July 22, the Kansas Highway Patrol has issued over 1,500 citations for divers speeding over 100 mph.
