Montgomery County Sheriff's Office warns about jury duty scam

In this scam, the scammer tries to convince the person that they have a fake warrant for missing jury duty.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) alerted the public of a recent scam that has been going around. In this scam, the scammer tries to convince the person that they have a fake warrant for missing jury duty.

MCSO says a person was contacted by someone pretending to be a deputy and when they claimed there was a warrant out for this person's arrest, the scammer insisted that the person stay on the phone and head to the sheriff's office. The scammer said they would be tracking the person via phone until they got to the office.

On top of this, the scammer demanded a $6,000 bond and tried to get this person's banking information to pay this bond. The person became suspicious and contacted the real MCSO to verify the claim.

The MCSO reminds everyone of the following:

  • It will never demand payment or personal details over the phone
  • It will not track you by phone to make sure you turn yourself in, deputies will see you in person if necessary
  • Always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be law enforcement
  • If you think something is a scam, explain that you want to be sure, hang up, and call your local sheriff's office or police department

Anyone who encounters similar or suspicious calls should not provide personal information and contact the dispatch center at (518) 853-5500.
