Wrapping up the month and the road trip!

After a couple of football-esque scores in the first two games at Fenway, the Mariners will look to end July on a high note with a series win.

Lineups:

Seattle’s lineup is a bit on the unorthodox side, with Jason Vosler in right field and Luke Raley in center. Víctor Robles left last night’s game with a hip issue, and unfortunately, it seems like Scott Servais is a bit concerned.

Get well soon, Víctor! Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner are back in the spots they were yesterday, and George Kirby will look to continue the run he’s on, with Mitch Garver catching him as is tradition.

For the Red Sox, Opening Day starter Brayan Bello will be on the mound. The righty has seen an uptick in walks and a slight downturn in ground balls this year, and it’s reflected in a spiked ERA of 5.27, nearly a full run worse than what he put up in 2023, though his 4.57 FIP is nearly identical to last year’s 4.54. Boston also made a few roster moves, jettisoning old friend Yohan Ramírez and optioning utilityman Jamie Westbrook in exchange for righty Lucas Sims and infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard - the latter of whom will make his big league debut when he gets into a game.

Game Info:

Today’s first pitch is at a somewhat unorthodox 1:10pm Pacific time, and will be available on all the usual channels. Dave Sims and Mike Blowers have the call on ROOT Sports NW, while Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith will be broadcasting the game on 710 AM Seattle Sports.

This Day in Mariners History:

  • 1985 - Gorman Thomas hit his club-record 11th homer in the month of July, the most ever by a Mariner in one month, to lead the Mariners to a 12-3 win over the Twins in the Kingdome. Jim Presley went 4-4 with two singles, a double and 2 home runs in the Mariners’ 16 hit attack.
  • 1992 - Edgar Martinez went 3-for-4 at Chicago to take over the lead in the batting race. Martinez would lead the rest of the season, finishing at .341 and winning the title, the Mariners first ever in a triple crown category.
  • 1996 - The Mariners tied a M.L. record as Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner all homer twice in a 9-3 win at Milwaukee. Seattle became just the ninth club to have three players hit two HR in a game.
  • 1998 - The Mariners received INF Carlos Guillen, RHP Freddy Garcia and a PTBNL (LHP John Halama) from the Astros in exchange for LHP Randy Johnson.
  • 2000 - Rickey Henderson collected his 6th consecutive BB, one short of ML record; Rickey also stole 3 bases for first time since July 16, 1999 @ TB while with NYM.
  • 2011 - Mariners trade LHP Erik Bedard and minor league RHP Josh Fields to Boston in exchange for OF Trayvon Robinson and OF Chih-Hsien Chiang.
  • 2014 - The Mariners acquired OF Austin Jackson from Detroit as part of a three-way trade with Detroit, Tampa Bay and Seattle, sending away INF Nick Franklin. OF Chris Denorfia was also acquired from San Diego for OF Abraham Almonte and RHP Stephen Kohlscheen.
  • 2015 - The Mariners acquired left-handed pitchers Rob Rasmussen, Jake Brentz and Nick Wells from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Mark Lowe. The Seattle also acquired right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ.
  • 2015 - Taijuan Walker allowed just one hit—a solo home run—in a complete game victory, recording 11 strikeouts in the Mariners 6-1 win at Minnesota. Walker’s 11 strikeouts matched a career high, and this was his first career complete game. Jesus Montero, who was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma prior to the game, went 2-for-4 with a home run—his first MLB home run since June 17, 2014.
  • 2023 – Mariners acquired INF Josh Rojas, OF Dominic Canzone and INF Ryan Bliss from Arizona in exchange for closer Paul Sewald.
