Matches between Spain vs South Africa and Holland vs China were put on hold in the women’s game.

In the men’s, the match between Germany and the Netherlands was suspended.

Fans inside the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium were promptly removed from the venue over weather concerns.

Both games saw fans evacuated “due to weather conditions”.

The FIH issued a statement saying: “Following a warning from Meteo France of imminent storms, a decision has been taken by the venue and the local authorities to evacuate the stadium in the interests of public safety.

“The matches today are played as per the schedule.”

And while the teams have now returned to play out the match, the fans have not come back.

That’s seen the games played out against an eerily empty backdrop.

Some fans on social media spoke of the confusion surrounding the evacuation and have asked for refunds.

One fan said: “The #Hockey session starting today at 5pm has been suspended midway.

“Spain – South Africa now playing for an empty stadium, with terrible communication from the officials. I ask the organizers of #Paris2024 to issue refunds for me and all other ticket owners.”

Confused TV viewers who were just tuning in for the hockey also asked why there were no fans present.

One fan said: “Why are there no spectators in the Spain vs South Africa #Hockey match?”

“Watching it on @discoveryplus right now.”
