Unpopular opinion:
I don’t see what’s the big deal about Jayson Tatum not being in the rotation of USAMB first game. They beat one of the most talented countries by 26(!!). Steve Kerr said JT will factor in against other opponents. That should just be that. Everyone can’t play. – 10:33 AM
Sam Quinn @SamQuinnCBS
I swear I think the message of this Jayson Tatum stuff is that Team USA should only bring six or seven All-Stars to future Olympics. Guarantee minutes for a small group, then have a wider pool of specialists who understand that they may not play. This is a dumb news cycle. – 9:47 PM

(And to be clear, I don’t really have a take on them not playing Tatum. Think there are absolutely matchups where he’ll be important. Can see a world where against Serbia it made more sense to go another way. Think I’m more just being patient to find out what the plan is for him) – 6:19 PM

It’s not a huge surprise to me that Kerr wouldn’t have been as enamored of Tatum’s game in this setting. Probably Tatum’s biggest weakness is holding the ball and Kerr hates that in general, and probably even more so on a team with this much talent. – 5:59 PM

More on this storyline

Kerr dealt with the awkward reality head-on, meeting with Tatum before the game to explain the decision and then in multiple meetings with the media. That included Monday, when Kerr made it clear that Tatum would be in the lineup Wednesday when the Americans face South Sudan. “Jayson will play [Wednesday],” Kerr said. “I’m not going to answer your next question, which is if he plays, who doesn’t. But we’re going to need him, and part of this job for me is to keep everybody engaged and ready, because my experience with this is crazy stuff happens.” -via ESPN / July 29, 2024
