ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) - August is National Breastfeeding Month. While research shows that breastfeeding has many benefits for both babies and moms, it isn't always easy. It can take some time to figure it out but moms aren't alone in this journey - there are local experts and free resources.

In this week's Women's Health Wednesday, Stephanie Avienu, a Lactation Specialist with St. Peter’s Health Partners sits down to discuss the basic health benefits of breastfeeding – for both baby and mom – and why some women may need additional support when breastfeeding.

There are local resources for pregnant and breastfeeding families such as, Baby Cafés. These are free events that include support from specially-trained staff and opportunities to share experiences with other moms and parents. Saint Peter's Health Partners operates seven cafés throughout the region in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties.

Saint Peter's Health Partners is hosting a local event next week to cap off World Breastfeeding Week. It will take place at the Mercy Auditorium in Albany. There will be lactation professionals on site, along with a list of other free events and demonstrations to help new moms and families.
