Former India Cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad Dies At 71 After Prolonged Battle With Blood Cancer
The BCCI pledged comprehensive support to Anshuman Gaekwad's family, who had been battling severe illness for over a year, as revealed by Sandeep Patil earlier this year.
New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71 after a long battle with blood cancer. Gaekwad’s 12-year career saw him play 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, amassing 1154 runs, including two centuries, with a top score of 201 against Pakistan in Jalandhar in 1983.
In an earlier compassionate gesture, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had pledged INR 1 crore to support Gaekwad. Shah personally reached out to Gaekwad’s family to offer heartfelt assistance during this difficult time.
In a press statement, the BCCI promised comprehensive assistance to Anshuman Gaekwad’s family, expressing their hope and confidence in his recovery. The 71-year-old Gaekwad’s dire situation was initially brought to light by former cricketer Sandeep Patil earlier this year. Patil revealed that Gaekwad had been courageously battling his illness for over a year and had been receiving treatment in London.

Gaekwad confided in Sandeep Patil about his financial struggles, prompting former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar to contact BCCI Treasurer Ashish Selar, who committed to providing financial support.

Notably, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev also advocated for monetary assistance for Gaekwad. Dev, along with former cricket legends such as Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad, collaborated to raise funds to support their ailing colleague.
