Condemned house on Omega Drive 'eyesore,' residents say

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- An unattended house has disrupted the peaceful atmosphere along Omega Drive.

Neighborhood residents call the 800-block property an eyesore, where curtains flutter through the empty window frames. Once a protective cover, the roof now sits open for all to witness the decay within.

Anthony Domingue recalls when people once lived there. He's sympathetic to their plight.

"You know you hate to say something about people in that situation, but it just brings down the whole neighborhood," Domingue said.

In May of last year, firefighters found themselves at the home. The property is believed to be condemned, and a bid awarded for demolition.

Councilman Elroy Broussard said when the city condemned the home several months ago, it had to be inspected for asbestos before being put up for a demolition bid.

"That took some time, but it came back clear. After we did that, we had to send it out for bids, and that took some time. I'm going to try to work with Environmental to put a list together. When we inspect, we inspect for everything," Councilman Broussard added.

City Councilman Broussard recently responded to the outcry at Himbola Manor Apartments.  Now, Broussard responds to Omega Drive residents.

"Perhaps I live in a microwave world where things should be done a bit faster than what has been done. So, let's be. I think when you take on a project, then you have got to make sure that all your eyes are dotted, and your tees are crossed.  So we move forward with it. The list is long and the faster we get to the end of the list, the more things we can do," Broussard said.

Meanwhile, residents like Domingue will keep their fingers crossed and hopes high.

"I don't live next door to these people; otherwise, I probably would have complained maybe more than they did," Domingue said.
