‘1923’ films on the streets of Lockhart 

The popular “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” was filmed this week on the streets of downtown Lockhart with historic buildings as a backdrop. 

LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) – The popular “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” was filmed this week on the streets of downtown Lockhart with historic buildings as a backdrop. 

The show joins other notable productions to film in the "Barbecue Capitol of Texas," such as “Transformers IV,” “Walker,” and “What's Eating Gilbert Grape.”

The City of Lockhart said that filming had wrapped by Wednesday, but locals and fans of the show were still out surveying the set, which was still filled with props. 

"We're huge fans. We think it's phenomenal that they're filming right here in Lockhart,” said Holly Sour, who lives in Lockhart. “The buildings and [architecture] are so old  – some of it is original still. Why wouldn't you take advantage of that?"

The Golden Globe-nominated series plans to use Austin as its base for production while filming throughout the state, bringing millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs to the area.

Increasing Tourism

Lockhart is a “film-friendly town,” meaning community leaders have been trained on how to most effectively work with production companies. 

“We have policies and procedures in place to make it easy for people to film here,” said Holly Malish, Lockhart's director of economic development  “I think that's something that sort of resonates with [filmmakers].”

Malish said that Lockhart wants to increase tourism. Big productions, like “1923,” filming in town, will help the city achieve this goal. 

“[People] are going to recognize [Lockhart’s] name,” she said. “They'll want to come and check out where it was filmed. They’ll want to come see the buildings.” 

Further, Malish said these productions are a boon for the entire region’s economy. 

“The entire cast and crew will rent and lease buildings, not just in Lockhart, but surrounding cities and communities,” she said. “It's a regional economic driver.”
