Thousands in Kansas without power due to severe weather

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Thousands of Kansans are without power, as severe thunderstorms move through Kansas.

According to the Evergy outage map, more than 53,000 Evergy customers in Kansas are affected by 512 power outages. There are 161 power outages across the capital city. In Topeka, there are almost 14,000 customers impacted by these outages.

On Tuesday night major storms with exceedingly high winds began rolling through Kansas and into Missouri causing major outages. As of 10:30 p.m., major wind damage was affecting customers in the Salina, Topeka, and Lawrence areas. We had more than 50,000 customers without power. The storm is still moving east across our service area and will likely cause additional damage.

Restoration efforts will begin as soon as it is safe to begin working outages. As we get teams in the field, we will get a better understanding of the extent of the damage and overall restoration times. In case of emergency, call 911. Stay away from downed power lines.

Thank you for your patience as we work to restore power.
