First GOP lawmaker to call Harris a DEI hire complains about being labeled racist

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) complained that he has been accused of racism after referring to presumed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris as a "DEI vice president."

During a Thursday interview with Burchett on Real America's Voice, host Michelle Backus noted that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was asked this week if he would tell his party to stop referring to Harris as a "DEI hire."

"You were the original person to call Kamala Harris a DEI hire because, as you pointed out, Joe Biden said he would only pick a Black female instead of picking the best person for the job," Backus opined.

He responded, "At some point, we're going to have to get by past color and sex of a person. And I go back to President Biden's quote. He said it. He said — he spelled it out."

"He said diversity, equity, inclusion, and then he went on to say it begins at the top with my vice president," he continued. "When Tim Burchett says it, it's racism."

The lawmaker claimed Biden had "discriminated against all the other folks."

"Black men, Asian men, Asian women, which she technically is half Asian, I guess," he said. "But the point is, is that when you say you're gonna take somebody from one area, that means that the other group, the other 90% of the population, is not even going to be considered."
