Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, has denied that the United States was involved in or had any prior knowledge of the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas’s political bureau.

Blinken stated that the US had no prior warning or role in the attack on Haniyeh.

On Wednesday, July 31st, Blinken made these remarks during an interview with Asia News, a Singaporean media outlet. He emphasized that the Biden administration did not receive any prior notice of the attack and was not involved in it.

Blinken reiterated the importance of a ceasefire and the release of hostages, including American citizens. He added that one of their key focuses is to prevent the Gaza conflict from escalating or spreading to other areas and confirmed that they would continue their efforts in this regard.

Ismail Haniyeh was killed early on Wednesday, July 31, at his residence in Tehran by a “projectile from the air.” Iranian officials have accused Israel of being behind the assassination and warned of a severe response.

Israel has not officially commented on the assassination of Haniyeh. In response, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the Islamic Republic will defend its “territorial integrity, honor, and dignity.”

Additionally, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin warned the previous day that the US would support Tel Aviv if it were attacked.
