Top Red Sox Prospect Reportedly Placed On Injured List
A top Red Sox prospect reportedly was placed on the injured list, but it isn't expected to be a lengthy stint.
The Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday placed Marcelo Mayer on the seven-day injured list due to a hip issue, according to multiple reports. Chris Hatfield of Sox Prospects was the first to report the news and added that a team source expects a minimum stint on the IL.
Mayer left Tuesday's matchup due to his injury, and he was out of the lineup Wednesday. The Boston Globe's Alex Speier reported that Double-A Portland had a thin roster and needed to add players, which was why Mayer was placed on IL rather than deemed day-to-day.
The IL stint came a day after Roman Anthony accomplished a powerful feat following an MLB trade deadline scare. Manager Alex Cora revealed Mayer and Anthony were the first players other teams asked for when the Red Sox inquired about top relievers.
There is a lot of anticipation for the pair and Kyle Teel to get called up after their performances in the Futures Game, but minor ailments like the one Mayer reportedly suffered this week show there is plenty of time for the prospects to one day make an impact at the major league level.
