Oregon coast state park reopening includes a 'noticeable change'

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Beverly Beach State Park is welcoming back campers on Thursday after shutting down for nearly one year for construction, Oregon State parks announced.

“We’re excited to have visitors back in the park. It’s one of the best parts of this job, and we have missed it,” Park Manager Burke Martin said.

Officials said a majority of the park’s construction is complete, with campsites ready to go after the 11-month closure.

Construction included moving overhead power lines underground for safety and to maintain electricity during high winds at the coast.

Aging waterlines were also replaced at the park with help from a $50 million bond investment from the Oregon State Legislature for state parks.

As part of a separate project, officials noted visitors will find one "noticeable change": More sunshine streaming through the tree canopy.

This comes after crews removed about 200 hazard trees for public safety.

“While the removal was necessary, it did impact the look of the park. Some campsites will have less shade and visual screening than before,” Oregon State Parks said.

The state park is seeing an increase in tree mortality that officials say is likely because of drought stress.

To improve long-term tree health, park staff plan on planting a variety of native trees and shrubs that can take on hotter and dryer conditions under the shifting climate.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during the construction and reopening. We understand that the park looks a little different, but the hazard tree removal makes it’s safer for visitors to enjoy,” Martin said.
