Meet the man who builds giant versions of household items, because why not?

Steve Wainwright said his retirement from the ambulance service first prompted him to take on some ‘creative’ building projects.

With its enormous proportions, Steve Wainwright’s monster three-pin plug is never going to fit in everyday sockets.

But the 61-year-old admits his bright idea is less about practicality – and all about dreaming big.

Now Steve has built an array of much-larger-than-life household items, including a key, a peg and even a lipstick.

The keen handyman, from Stanground in Cambridgeshire, said his retirement from the ambulance service first prompted him to take on some ‘creative’ building projects.

The former electrician said: ‘I felt a bit lost. I’ve always truly enjoyed engineering, building and DIY and can put my hand to anything.’

Inspiration hit Steve when a prolonged bout of rain stopped him from ‘going out to play’ on one of his many building projects in the garden.

‘I looked at my tape measure and I thought: “I wonder if I can build this ten times its size?”’ he said. Within a short time, the handyman had fashioned a table-sized tape measure, replete with retractable giant tape.

Shortly after, Steve’s wife set him another challenge and asked him to build her a lipstick ten times the usual size – and he duly obliged.

Since then, Steve has gone on to build more giant objects, also including pencils and pencil sharpeners that are definitely too large for normal pencil cases.

He usually chooses to create items at 10 times their usual size simply because the conversion is ‘easy maths’.

Many of of his creations have fascinated passers-by, who have spied them from the footpath as they walk past his garage – and stop to ask questions.

‘The mums and dads bringing their kids to school are looking and going: “Oh my god. What’s going on?’” Steve said.

And while people’s reactions are generally positive, Steve has noticed a distinct difference in the response from men and women.

‘Men say: “Wow! That’s out of this world!” And women go: “What on earth are you going to do with that? Where are you going to put that?”

‘They’re sort of slotted in little gaps around the house,’ he added.
