Spurs captain, Heung-Min Son, is a national icon in South Korea and he hasn’t ruled out a move back to his home country in the future.

Son was flying in Tottenham’s clash in Korea

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs travelled to Seoul for the second time in three years this pre-season with Heung-Min Son understandably being the man who attracted the most attention whilst playing in his home nation.

Son repaid the home crowd’s adoration for him with a stunning display that fans have come to expect from the 32-year-old who curled in a typical long-range effort in the 37th minute, only to double his tally seven minutes later.

Tottenham’s captain is not showing any signs of slowing down, even at 32, although his current Spurs deal expires in a year’s time (TransferMarkt). It appears as though the Korean media are already dreaming of Son making a huge transfer to his native league.

Son has not ruled out a future move to the K-League

The Korean media were keen to understand Son’s appreciation for the football that is played in his home nation following his outstanding display against their all-star team (K League United).

Son said: “First of all, I think because of time differences, it’s really hard to watch the live games, but I’m still very interested in the K League because all of my friends are playing in the K League. And I really enjoy to watch. If you have a chance to watch live games or even highlights, I’ll try to watch as many games as possible.”

Son didn’t rule out a future move to the league too, stating: “It’s fun to watch because we all love football, you know, so especially back home. It means something, but, if I’ll play in the K League, I don’t know, (in) football, you never know.

“I can’t give you an answer right now, but I just want to focus on where I am now, so, as I said last year, before we started the season, I got a lot of things to do in the Premier League, so I want to improve as much as I can, and I want to be a better player as much as I can.

“So, yeah, football, you never know. I can’t give you the answer, but you never know. Let’s see what happens.”

Spurs Web opinion

Tottenham will have to make a decision on Son’s contract situation very shortly, with the club presumably unlikely to let their captain depart for free.

However, I would suggest that Son would either play a few more seasons at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and if not, at a similarly high-level, before moving to the K-League.

South Korea clearly have plenty of talented players as displayed in Spurs’ close-fought friendly but is a big drop in quality from the level Son is currently playing at.
