On Thursday, a spokesperson for the US Department of State stated that the country is working with global partners to prevent the resurgence of terrorist threats in Afghanistan.

Vedant Patel described ISIS as an “international terrorist network” with the “capacity to carry out attacks worldwide.”

Patel responded to a question from a Pakistani journalist about a UN report on the emergence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan during a press briefing. He emphasized that the US is continuously working to ensure that Afghanistan does not become a platform for terrorist attacks against the United States and its allies.

He reiterated that the US efforts, in collaboration with international and regional partners, continue to focus on countering international terrorism. Patel added that the US is cooperating with partners and allies in the region to prevent the re-emergence of external threats in Afghanistan.

Patel characterized ISIS as an “international terrorist network” with the “ability to carry out international terrorist attacks.” This underscores the seriousness of the threat posed by ISIS and similar groups.

The UN Security Council had previously highlighted the significant increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan, attributing some of these threats to the situation in Afghanistan. This has raised further concerns among UN member countries.

The Council reported an increase in cooperation between Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Taliban in terms of sharing personnel and training camps. This development adds complexity to the regional security situation and raises alarm about the growing coordination between terrorist groups.

In late July, the UN monitoring team on ISIS, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban labeled Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as “the largest terrorist group in Afghanistan.” This designation reflects the increasing influence and activities of the TTP in the region.

The escalation of terrorist activities and the growing coordination between various militant groups present a significant challenge for regional stability. The increasing presence of these groups not only exacerbates the humanitarian crisis but also threatens the security of neighboring countries and international interests.

As the Afghanistan situation evolves, global and regional efforts are vital for mitigating militant threats and achieving lasting peace.
