I’m in a horrendously bad way admits bedbound Greg Rutherford saying ‘I haven’t been this ill in a long time’

GREG Rutherford is bedbound and in an “horrendously bad way” after falling ill in Paris.

The former athlete, 37, is in the French capital for the Olympic Games and recorded an episode of the Inside Track podcast with retired track and field star Sanya Richards-Ross.

But just hours after the show had wrapped Greg was struck down with sickness.

Speaking from his bed, a peaky Greg said: “Hello everyone. Thought I’d give you a little update. I’ve just recorded the first pod with Sanya, really good fun. But I got food poisoning last night. I have been in a horrendously bad way and I haven’t felt this unwell in a long time.

“I’ve been puking, like violently projectile vomiting, not to get really in depth with everybody. Day one in Paris has been me laying on my bed, getting up recording the first show, and I’m now back in bed before we record another show in two hours time. God food poisoning is horrendous.”

It’s the latest incident in a tough year for Greg.

Back in January he was forced out of the Dancing on Ice final after giving himself a ‘C-section’ in a horror rehearsal accident that saw his abdomen slashed by a skate blade.

Weeks ago the medal-winning Olympian discussed his recovery and the extent of his injuries with Lorraine Kelly.

He said: “I am a lot better thank you.

“I have had to have surgery to repair the injury, so I had a pretty nasty hernia form and I also detached my lower left ab so less than ideal.

“Not what you expect.”

He added: “It’s a tough thing, because mentally you have to get your head around it as well.

“From doing this incredible show in the limelight and doing these incredible skates and all of a sudden you can’t move.”

The injury happened when he slid between a dancer’s legs on his front.

Greg explained: “That was the moment my lower left ab completely detached but then also the herniation above my belly button.”

He said: “I couldn’t move – it was one of the most bizarre things.

“I think it was because it was in my stomach and you realise how much you use your stomach to move.

“So I was there on the ice for 10 minutes with gas and air while they had to get me off.”

Despite the horror injury and surgery that followed, Greg admitted he feels there is “a little bit” of unfinished business on the ITV reality series.

He said: “It’s been early stage discussed whether or not I come back and do one skate maybe.

“I don’t know whether or not it will happen – of course we have to make sure Vanessa definitely comes back.”

He then added: “I would love to give it another go.”

In June Greg’s son Rexy was rushed to hospital with a bloody head injury after hitting it on a door frame.

A couple of months prior to that Greg was once again bedridden with whooping cough at the same time his beloved pet dog was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
