Jean Smart (‘Hacks’): Emmys 2024 episode submission revealed

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Jean Smart is entering the “Hacks” episode “Yes, And” as her 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actress. The episode aired on May 23 and is the eighth one of the third season of the Max series.

In “Yes, And,” Deborah (Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) head to Berkeley, where the former is scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate from her alma mater. Things unravel when a supercut of Deborah’s old, problematic material goes viral, forcing a defiant Deborah to confront cancel culture, first by trying to win over the students by doing improv and partying at a frat house. After her test show and doctorate ceremony get canceled, she participates in a student town hall, during which she apologizes for her past jokes and listens. Later back home, Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) delivers the news that Deborah got the late-night show and that the network axed the test show because she had already proven herself when she guest-hosted.

A 13-time nominee and five-time winner, Smart won this award in 2021 and 2022 for the first two seasons of “Hacks.” Her other victories are in Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “Samantha Who?” (2008) and Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Frasier” (2000-01). In this year’s race, she faces Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”), Maya Rudolph (“Loot”) and Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”).

“Hacks” received 16 nominations for its third season. It has won six Emmys thus far.
