Kate Middleton's Next Major Appearance Might Involve a Trip Out of the UK

Kate Middleton is on her summer break with Prince William and their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, but she might put the vacation on hold for a few days. The Princess of Wales is considering an invitation to the Paris Olympics for the second week of sporting events.

Kate has largely been absent from the public eye in 2024 because she’s battling cancer, but her two events — Trooping the Colour and the men’s singles final at Wimbledon — have drawn support from royal fans. Making an appearance at the Summer Games would likely draw goodwill for the royal family and it’s something that she is “keen” to do, according to the Daily Express. “The Princess would love to go to the Olympics,” a source told the U.K. outlet. “She has such fond memories of London 2012 and is keen to go to another Games while it’s so close to home.”

The Princess of Wales shared in a personal statement in June that she has “good days and bad days,” and her health will dictate whether she’s feeling up to traveling to France. William is expected to attend the climbing competition which begins on Monday, Aug. 5. The sport made its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so the athletes would likely appreciate having a high-profile royal in the audience. While Kate’s presence is still a question mark, there is one royal family member who has been very present throughout the Paris Olympics.

Princess Anne, who competed in equestrian at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, is President of the British Olympic Association and a member of the International Olympic Committee. She’s been rooting for Team Great Britain and presenting medals to the winners over the course of the Summer Games. Anne’s attendance in Paris is no surprise given her history with the Olympics and her reputation for being the hardest-working royal.

While Kate is understandably prioritizing her health this year, there are still whispers about William’s work ethic. He pulled back on public duties to help his children adjust to their new normal with the Princess of Wales’ cancer battle, but his lighter schedule has not stopped the “Work-Shy Willie” nickname in the press. The Daily Mail reported earlier this year that he was dubbed the “10 am to 4 pm” prince by King Charles III’s inner circle, so perhaps an appearance at the Olympics would help silence some of his critics.
