Troy man sentenced to 63 months in prison

The United States Department of Justice announced that Derbie Michel, 33, of Troy, was sentenced to 63 months in prison on Friday. His sentencing stems from a 2022 charge for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The United States Department of Justice announced that Derbie Michel, 33, of Troy, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison on Friday. His sentencing stems from a 2022 charge for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.

Michel, who has three previous felony convictions, admitted to deputies that he possessed five rounds of ammunition on October 15, 2022. According to the Department of Justice, during a car pursuit in Troy, Michel threw five rounds of ammunition and a privately made firearm from the car.

At his sentencing, Senior United States District Judge Frederick J. Scullin Jr. found that Michel recklessly endangered others by instructing the driver of the vehicle to engage in a car chase. The judge also found that Michel obstructed justice by making false statements to the court.

The case was investigated by the Troy Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Capital District Safe Streets Gang Task Force. At Michel's sentencing, Scullin also ordered him to serve three years of supervision upon his release from prison.
